The former Post Office in the Cornhill. The Cornhill has been at the centre of town life since Saxon times, witnessing markets, public meetings, civic ceremonies and fairs. The Cornhill has also witnessed some more disturbing events. The stocks and pillory stood here, where miscreant townsfolk were publicly humiliated. Nine people were burned at the stake between 1538 and 1558. A priest was hung, drawn and quartered in 1588. In 1644 the Widow Lackland was burnt thanks to Matthew Hopkins the Witchfinder general, who lived in north Essex. Between 1645 and 1647, 109 witches were executed in England, 60 of them in Suffolk alone. No wonder visiting football fans dread coming to Ipswich.
