Foreword by the
Mayor of Ipswich Hamil Clark
The year
2000 holds additional significance for Ipswich as the town celebrates
its 800th anniversary of the granting of our Royal Charter by
King John in 1200AD. The expectations for the
town to celebrate will be high.
The prospectus
for millennium/charter celebrations highlights events and projects,
which we hope to deliver in this memorable year, but it is your
millennium and we need your responses, your ideas and your involvement. Let
it provoke memories, build a lasting testament for our successors,
providing support for future generations.
The start of the millennium
will be the focus for a wide range of events throughout Britain
and much of the world from the end of December 1999 to the start
of January 2001. Festivals, exhibitions, commemorations and a
host of local and national celebrations will be held to mark the
event. Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, has an opportunity
to celebrate in three special ways
a celebration
of our heritage
a legacy
for future generations
raising
the profile of our town stimulating growth and job opportunities
Ipswich 2000/800 was established
with the primary intention of raising the profile of the town
to focus county attention on our exceptional heritage and to create
pride and build community spirit, which will last beyond this
special year. The
kind of desirable annual events that reflect the town's past glories
